Spatial mismatch in diversity facets reveals contrasting protection for New Zealand's cetacean biodiversity

چکیده
Cetaceans play key roles in the world's ecosystems and provide important economic social benefits. New Zealand's Exclusive Economic Zone is a global biodiversity hotspot for cetaceans benefits from system of marine protected areas (MPAs). However, spatial patterns cetacean their overlap with MPAs have never been assessed. We quantify this by using comprehensive at-sea sightings database, high-resolution environmental data layers, information on ecological evolutionary characteristics each species to model taxonomic, functional, phylogenetic diversity cetaceans. examine congruence among hotspots richness uniqueness components measure contribution biodiversity. find that taxonomic are spatially mismatched MPAs, but less true functional diversity. Hotspots indices located continental shelf break, whereas closer shore shelf. Seven high contributions biodiversity, blue whale being only evolutionarily distinct, functionally unique, specialised globally endangered. Our results underline potential multicomponent indices, congruence, be used as guides strategic placement expansion protect

Dimensions of biodiversity loss: Spatial mismatch in land‐use impacts on species, functional and phylogenetic diversity of European bees
Aim Agricultural intensification and urbanization are important drivers of biodiversity change in Europe. Different aspects of bee community diversity vary in their sensitivity to these pressures, as well as independently influencing ecosystem service provision (pollination). To obtain a more comprehensive understanding of human impacts on bee diversity across Europe, we assess multiple, comple...
متن کاملSpatial Mismatch or Racial Mismatch?
We contrast the spatial mismatch hypothesis with what we term the racial mismatch hypothesis - that the problem is not a lack of jobs, per se, where blacks live, but a lack of jobs where blacks live into which blacks are hired. We first report new evidence on the spatial mismatch hypothesis, using data from Census Long-Form respondents. We construct direct measures of the presence of jobs in de...

متن کاملUS protected lands mismatch biodiversity priorities.
Because habitat loss is the main cause of extinction, where and how much society chooses to protect is vital for saving species. The United States is well positioned economically and politically to pursue habitat conservation should it be a societal goal. We assessed the US protected area portfolio with respect to biodiversity in the country. New synthesis maps for terrestrial vertebrates, fres...
متن کاملSpecies diversity or biodiversity?
Species diversity and biodiversity are widely used terms in ecology and natural resource management. Despite this, they are not easily defined and different authors apply these terms with varying connotations. The term biodiversity, in particular, has the dubious honour of being widely used but rarely defined. Is it simply the number of species or is it something more? Here I consider what thes...
